“HINDOOSTAN” Philadelphia: Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co., c. 1850. Fine engraved map with original hand-coloring. (Image: 15 1/8 x 12 ¼’’)
This historical map depicts India in considerable detail. Topographical features are shown with cities, towns, mountains, and waterways identified. The Unexplored Country in the southeastern region is also noted.
The inset, lower right, depicts the “Delta of the Ganges”. The insets at the top list the British Territories with population, and list the French, Portuguese and Danish possessions.
The key identifies the British Possessions, States under its protection and Independent States. A very attractive view of India as it was known in the mid-19th century.
