''RUSSIA IN ASIA'' Philadelphia: Anthony Finley, A New General Atlas, 1827. (Image: 8 5/8 x 11 1/4’’). Very fine map with full original hand-coloring, engraved by Young & Delleker.
This handsome historical map depicts Asian Russia as it was known in the early 1800’s. Topographical features are shown with major towns, cities, water routes, mountains and islands located.
Land of Liakhov is shown in the Arctic Ocean. Discovered by Ivan Liakhov who was so amazed at the amount of fossil mammoth ivory on the islands that he was convinced the islands were entirely composed of the ivory.
A fine example from Finley’s atlas which was highly praised for its elegance and clarity.
