c 1863 Map of the United States - Mitchell

“MAP OF THE UNITED STATES, AND TERRITORIES.  TOGETHER WITH CANADA &c.”  Philadelphia:  S. Augustus Mitchell, Jr., c. 1863. dated 1860 in the lower margin and published in the 1863 edition of Mitchell's New General Atlas. Sheet size is 15.25 x 23 inches; map including decorative border is 13.25 x 21.25 inches.  A beautiful example of this  original map with bright original hand coloring. Centerfold as issued, minor dampstaining in the upper center margin.

This very informative map depicts the United States as it existed for a brief period in the early 1860’s. The Territories of Washington (statehood 1889), Colorado (statehood 1876), and New Mexico (statehood 1912), have present-day boundaries. The Territory of Idaho (statehood 1890) includes present-day Montana and Wyoming. The Territories of Nevada (statehood 1864), Utah (statehood 1896), and Arizona, (statehood 1912) all had their borders changed when admitted as states. Indian Territory became Oklahoma in 1907, and the Territory of “Dacotah” was split and admitted as North and South Dakota in 1889.

The “Santa Fe Trail”, “Pony Express Route”, Oregon Trail, “Over-land Mail Route”, and other “Wagon Roads” are well noted. Two insets depict “Hampton Roads and Norfolk Harbor” and “Pensacola Bay”. A great view of the country in the midst of the American Civil War.
