“MAP OF CONNECTICUT” Philadelphia: Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co., c. 1850. Engraved map with original hand coloring. (Image: 12 ½ x 14 ¾’’)
This map depicts Connecticut with its counties named and in contrasting colors. Topographical features are shown, and major towns and cities are located. Numerous stage routes, railroads and water routes are identified.
Court Houses, Churches, Tavern, Mills and Bridges are also located. The table, left, lists the counties with their population as of 1850. Beneath the table is a listing of the change in population from 1701 to 1850.
The two insets in the lower right depict “Hartford &c.” and “New Haven &c”. An excellent view of the state as it existed prior to the Civil War!
