This unusual map depicts the United States in great detail. The chart, lower right, explains density in population in 1890 by color. Topographical features are shown, states are named and delineated, and major cities, towns, Indian Reservations, waterways, mountains, and deserts are located. The railway system is also shown across the country.
The note, at the bottom notes the increase in “Average Density of Population” per square mile from 1880 to 1890. A series of red stars on the map show the shift in the centr of population from 1790 to 1890. A very attractive and informative view of the United States over 100 years ago!
