Thornton's Temple of Flora c. 1812 - Frontis

An exquisite original image from one of the most impressive English botanical works ever produced: THE TEMPLE OF FLORA by Dr. Robert John Thornton.  From the Quarto ("Lottery") edition - produced and published in London, c. 1812.

This image depicts "Flora dispensing Her Favours on the Earth", the Frontis leaf from the volume.

The first floral prints with a landscape background, these dramatic images, with their exotic and dramatic setting, are a technical masterpiece - a combination of aquatint, mezzotint and line engraving - partially printed in color and partially colored by hand.

Determined to produce the greatest series of botanicals, Dr. Thornton exhausted his fortune on this costly, magnificent endeavor.

Image size is approximately 12 11/16 x 9 3/16 inches.
