“AFRICA…” Seutter. Augsburg: T. C. Lotter, c. 1760. Engraved map with original hand-coloring. (Image: 7 ¾ x 10 1/8 ’’)
This attractive map depicts the African continent with countries named and in contrasting colors. Topographical features are well shown and cities, towns, waterways, mountains, forests, deserts, and islands are identified.
The Nile is shown originating in the south at lakes Zaire & Zaflan, and continuing further south. Also of interest are the large lakes in Central Africa.
The highly decorative title cartouche shows native inhabitants, pyramids, animals (including a crocodile, lion, snakes, and a winged dragon), a lighthouse and ship at sea.
