"MAP OF THE UNITED STATES, AND TERRITORIES. TOGETHER WITH CANADA &c." Philadelphia: S. Augustus Mitchell, Jr., c. 1863 (copyright dated 1860 in the lower margin, and published in the 1863 issue of Mitchell's New General Atlas). Engraved map with original hand-coloring. (Image: 13 ¼ x 21 ¼”)
This handsome historical and very informative map depicts the United States as it existed in the 1860’s and is the first appearance on Mitchell maps of Wyoming (shown as attached to Dakotah Tty) and of Montana Territory.
The Territories of Washington (statehood 1889), Idaho (statehood 1890), Utah (statehood 1896), Colorado (statehood 1876), Nevada (statehood 1864), Arizona, New Mexico (statehood 1912) and Indian Territory (admitted as Oklahoma 1907) are shown. The Territory of Dacotah would be split and admitted as North and South Dakota in 1889 and Wyoming in 1890.
The “Wagon Road,” “Emigrants Road,” “Mail Route,” “Pony Express” and Rail Routes are shown across the country. The location of many Indian Tribes is also given.
Two insets depict “Hampton Roads and Norfolk Harbor” and “Pensacola Bay”. A great view of the country in the midst of the American Civil War.
