''MAP OF NORTH AMERICA'' c 1850 - Cowperthwait

$0.00

''MAP OF NORTH AMERICA.''  Philadelphia:  Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co., c. 1850.  Fine engraved map with original hand-coloring.(Image: 15 1/2 x 12 3/4'’)

This very historical and decorative map depicts North America during a very important and rapidly changing period. In the United States, the western region is divided into Territories and the boundaries reflect the changes made by the 1850 Compromise (the formation of Utah Territory, extending westward to California, & New Mexico Territory, extending from Texas to California; California admitted into the Union; Texas’ reduced and current boundaries formed...).

The Gadsden Purchase is not reflected (1853) and Russia still owned Alaska (until 1867).

Throughout the continent topographical features are shown with major cities, mountains and water routes identified.  Native American Tribes are also located. A highly informative view of the continent prior to the Civil War.
