(Sheet size 17.75 x 22.75 inches)

This map, with its rich hand-coloring, elegant lettering, and elaborate strapwork cartouches, depicts the northern French region of Artois as it was known in the 16th century. Topographical features are shown and most towns, cities, and waterways are identified.

Published by Ortelius, from the “first modern atlas” Theatrum Orbis Terrarum - which contained some of the most beautiful engravings of the late sixteenth century!  Ortelius attempted to use the most up-to-date information - making his maps cartographically important. Ortelius’ strong sense of composition and design make his maps not only historically important, but aesthetically pleasing as well! (Ref:  Tooley, Maps and Map-Makers, p. 39).

A handsome example in excellent condition of the cartography of Abraham Ortelius, perhaps the best known and most frequently collected of all sixteenth century mapmakers.
