''AMERICA SEPTENTRIONALIS...” J. B. D'Anville.  Nuremberg: Homann Heirs, c. 1756.  Engraved map with original outline color. Ref: (Nebenzahl: The Compass, #19, item #33 - illustrated).(Image: 17 3/4 x19 3/4’’)

This important historical map depicts the British and French colonies at the onset of the French and Indian War. The War began in 1754, but it was not until 1756 that England declared war against France – which ended the Treaty of Paris in 1763. The title reveals that the latest information from western Virginia (i.e., the Ohio Valley) has been included.

The French forts in Ohio, which were defended from Braddock and Washington in 1754, are marked. Walker's Settlement of 1750 is also noted (Thomas Walker, the representative of the Loyal Land Company of Virginia, was sent on an exploratory mission to find desirable settlement sites west of the Blue Ridge Mountains and is considered the first white man to pass the present boundaries of Kentucky).

The colonial boundaries are shown extending out beyond the Mississippi, with New England's claims reaching into Manitoba.
