''ILE DE LA RÉUNION...'' Paris: Victor Levasseur, c. 1852.  Engraved map with original hand-coloring. (Image size: 11 1/2 x 16 3/4 ’’).  Beautiful map in excellent condition from one of the finest decorative atlases of the 19th century.

This map depicts Reunion Island (formerly known as Ile Bourbon in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar.  It was a popular trading base for Indian Ocean Pirates in the late 17th century. It has been a department of France since 1946.

Reunion is known for its volcanic, rainforested interior, offshore reefs, beaches and Creole culture. Topographical features are shown, and several rivers and towns are identified. Surrounding the map are detailed vignettes including portraits of Parny and Bertin, island natives, and plants indigenous to the island, a volcano and scene of a harbor town. .
