IM-13685: Original leaf from a medieval illuminated manuscript Book of Hours. 25 lines of red-ruled Latin text on animal vellum; angular gothic book-hand script; illuminated line extenders in red & blue, with liquid gold infill.

The leaf contains (recto) an exceptional three-quarter-page miniature painting of The Annunciation to the Virgin Mary surrounded by an elaborate panel border in acanthus & diverse floral motifs in colors & liquid gold. The leaf is additionally embelished with a three-line illuminated initial and one two-line illuminated initial in blue & white on a red ground with gold penwork; one one-line illuminated initial in sepia and gold on a blue ground with white penwork; five one-line initials in gold alternating red & sepia grounds. The Latin text is for the opening of the Hour of Matins.

The Annunciation to the Virgin shows Angel Gabriel appearing to the Virgin Mary in her bedchamber as Mary kneels, hands folded, reading from her open prayer book. Rays of light emanate from the heavens as the Holy Spirit, in form of a dove, descends towards Mary. Gabriel, with luminous wings & on bended knee, points upward with right hand.
