This a handsome double map of the French regions of Calais, Boulogne, and Vermandois in Northern France. The map at left shows the strategic French and Belgian coastal region from Estaples to Gruerlinge, including Calais and Boulonge with rivers, towns, forests and fortifications wel ldelineated.. The right-hand map, oriented with South at the top, shows the inland region centered on Perone and S. Quintin, along the Sere and Oyse Rivers with similar precise attention to details.
Abraham Ortelius (1527–1598), Geographer Royal to Philip II of Spain published the landmark atlas Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, considered the world's first modern atlas. He is perhaps the best known and most frequently collected of all sixteenth-century mapmakers.
A strong dark impression in nice condition with toning evident at the centerfold.
