This very attractive early 17th century map depicts Ancient Gaul (France and portions of Belgium) according to Julius Caesar’s ancient commentary. The country is divided into five regions. The names of the regions and tribes of Gallia, as described by Caesar, are listed at the sides. His portrait, derived from ancient sources, is shown as a medallion in the upper cartouche.

Most ancient towns, cities, forests, and waterways are identified – including Paris, Nantes, Geneva, and Lake Geneva.  The attractive title cartouche and portrait of Julius Caesar further enhances the map.

Blaeu was founder of the leading 17th century Dutch cartographic firm. “The achievements of the firms of Blaeu were remarkable, & the palm for supremacy in map production in any age must be awarded to the Blaeu” (Tooley: Maps & Map-Makers, p. 33).

A strongly struck image in good condition, with irregular toning as seen in the photos.
