Original leaf from a medieval illuminated manuscript Book of Hours. 14 lines of hand-ruled text written in Latin with dark brown ink in fine Gothic script on animal vellum.

One two-line illuminated initial in liquid gold on blue ground with white penwork and a floral design into the margin in green, pink and gold; eight one-line illuminated initials in liquid gold on alternating red and blue ground.           

Origin:  Flanders circa 1475.

Size:  90 x 67mm – 3 ½ x 2 5/8 inches, from a diminutive manuscript likely written for a lady.

The one-line illuminated “B” continues Psalm 126 (King James 127) 2-5: “Cum…” (When he shall give sleep to his beloved., behold the inheritance of the Lord are children: the reward, the fruit of the womb…). 

The two-line illuminated “B” begins Psalm 127 (KJ 128) 1-5: “Beati…”  (Blessed are all they that fear the Lord: that walk in his ways. For thou shalt eat the labors of thy hands: blessed art thou, and it shall be well with thee. Thy wife as a fruitful vine, on the sides of thy house. Thy children as olive plants, round about thy table. Behold, thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the Lord…).
