IM-13636: Original leaf from a medieval illuminated manuscript Book of Hours. 17 lines of text, ruled in red, written in Latin with dark brown ink in precise and elegant lettre batarde script on animal vellum with rubrics in red. (155x95mm – 6 x 3.75’’)

Extensively embellished with one two-line illuminated initial, eleven one-line illuminated initials and six illuminated line extenders in gold on alternating red and blue ground with delicate gold penwork.

Northern France, c. 1470.

The one-line illuminated “I” continues Psalm 137 (King James 138) 3-8: “In quacumque…” (In what day so ever I shall call upon thee, hear me: thou shalt multiply strength in my soul. May all the kings of the earth give glory to thee: for they have heard all the words of thy mouth. And let them sing in the ways of the Lord: for great is the glory of the Lord…).

The two-line illuminated “M” begins the Magnificat – Luke 1:46-51: “Magnificat anima mea…” (My soul doth magnify the Lord. And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid; for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. Because he that is mighty, hath done great things to me; and holy is his name. And his mercy is from generation unto generations, to them that fear him…).
