IM-13624:  Original leaf from a medieval illuminated manuscript Book of Hours. 25 lines, of red-ruled Latin in dark brown ink, written in fine gothic script on animal vellum with rubrics in blue.                                             

France, c. 1460.

Size: 160x100mm – 6.25 x 4 inches

Lavishely embellished with Three two-line illuminated initials in blue and white on a red ground with gold penwork; two two-line illuminated initials  in sepia and gold on blue ground with white penwork; four one-line illuminated initials and five illuminated line-extenders (two in branch-like forms) in gold on alternating blue, red and sepia ground with gold highlights.

The two-line illuminated “D” continues the Hours of the Cross Domine…” (O Lord Jesus Christ the Son of the living God, set Thy passion, cross, and death between Thy judgment and my soul, now, and in the hour of my death and vouchsafe to grant unto me grace and mercy: to the living and the dead rest and pardon: to Thy Church peace and concord, and to us sinners life and glory everlasting).

The two-line illuminated “D” begins the Hour of Compline: Converte…” (Convert us O God our Savior. And turn away thy wrath from us…).

The two-line illuminated “H” begins the hymn:  “Hora completorii…” (When as compline was come was laid in his tomb, Christ his body precious in the hope of life to come. Embalmed it was: scriptures thus accomplished we see: Still this death to have in mind my care O let it be).

The next two-line illuminated “H” begins:  “Has horas…” (These hours canonical with devotion to thee, and with godly intention O Christ we address, In the fervor of thy love that hast suffered for me, Comfortable to be to me in bitter death’s distress).

The last two-line illuminated “D” repeats the prayer:  “Domine…” (Oh Lord Jesus Christ the Son of the living God…).
