M-1599: “AMERIQUE SEPTENTRIONALE”
Paris: Rigobert Bonne, c. 1780. Fine engraved map on hand laid paper. Folds as issued. From G. Raynal, "Atlas de toutes les parties connues du globe terrestre..."
Size: sheet 11 x 15.75 inches; image 8.25 x 12.5 inches
This handsome map depicts North America as it appeared during the Revolutionary War. “Louisiane” was at this time under the Spanish flag (France ceded this colony to Spain in 1763 to spite the English - regaining it again in 1800). “Texas” is named and included as part of the “Nouv. Mexique” region. Several Indian tribes are located and major cities, towns, settlements and waterways are located. The central and northwestern portion of the continent was virtually unknown, and rendered as a blank space. The eastern seaboard and the seat of the war are well described with colonies and major cities placed.
Rigobert Bonne (c. 1729 - 1795) was a well-respected French cartographer who served as Royal Hydrographer. His principal interest lay in the production of marine charts which were noted for their detail and accuracy.
A very interesting view of the continent as it was known in the 1780’s.
