IM-13591: Original leaf from a medieval manuscript Book of Hours. 25 lines, of red-ruled Latin in dark brown ink, written in fine gothic script on animal vellum with rubrics in blue.

One two-line illuminated initial in blue and white on a red ground with gold pen-work; fourteen one-line illuminated initials and eleven illuminated line-extenders (three in branch-like forms) in gold on alternating blue, red and sepia ground with gold highlights.   

France, c. 1460.

Size: 160x100mm – 6.25 x 4 inches.

The two-line illuminated “D” begins Psalm 37 (King James 38) 1-14: “Domine ne in furore…” (Rebuke me not, O Lord, in thy indignation; nor chastise me in thy wrath. For thy arrows are fastened in me: and thy hand hath been strong upon me. There is no health in my flesh, because of thy wrath: there is no peace for my bones, because of my sins. For my iniquities are gone over my head: and as heavy burden are become heavy upon me…).

Psalm 37 (KJ 38) is the third of the Penitential Psalms.  The Penitential Psalms are a group of 7 psalms considered appropriate for prayer during times of repentence.
