$135.00

M-10183:   “MAP OF NORTH AMERICA.”  Philadelphia:  Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co., c. 1850. From Cowperthwait’s New Universal Atlas, dated 1850 in the lower left margin.

Image Size: 15.5 x 12.75 inches

This very historical and decorative map depicts North America during an important and rapidly changing period. In the United States, the western region is divided into Territories and the boundaries reflect the changes made by the 1850 Compromise (the formation of Utah Territory, extending westward to California, & New Mexico Territory, extending from Texas to California; California admitted into the Union; Texas’ reduced and current boundaries formed...).

The southwestern boundary between US and Mexico is in the Pre-Gadsden Purchase configuration, before the United States extended south of the Gila River to its present boundary in 1853. Alaska is shown as Russian Alaska since Russia still owned Alaska until 1867.

Throughout the continent, topographical features are shown with major cities, mountains and water routes identified.  Native American Tribes are also located. A highly informative view of the continent prior to the Civil War.

Fine engraved map with original hand-coloring.
