This detailed view is titled “Sasquesahanok” (Susquehanna) which refers to the region near the river of the same name in present-day Pennsylvania. 

It is actually of Pomeioc – a fortified coastal Carolina Indian village situated in what is now Hyde County, North Carolina. The view is derived from a 1585-86 drawing made on site by artist John White, a member of the Roanoke expedition. The original drawing is in the British Museum.

Views from this important series by Arnoldus Montanus, a Dutch explorer missionary and theologian, served as an illustrated compendium of discoveries, conquests, & settlements in the New World. (Ref: Deák, Picturing America, #50-51).

Excellent condition and a fine, bold impresion of the engraving.
