Original leaf  from a medieval illuminated manuscript Book of Hours. 14 lines of hand-ruled text written in Latin with dark brown ink in fine Gothic script on animal vellum. Eight one-line illuminated initials in liquid gold on alternating red and blue ground.             

Origin:  Flanders circa 1475.

Size (each leaf):  90 x 67mm – 3 ½ x 2 5/8 inches, from a diminutive manuscript likely written for a lady.

The one-line illuminated “D” begins Psalm 44 (King James 45) 6-12: “Deus in medio…” (Thy arrows are sharp: under thee shall people fall, into the hearts of the king’s enemies. Thy throne, O God, is forever and ever: the scepter of thy kingdom is a scepter of uprightness. Thou hast loved justice, and hated iniquity: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. Myrrh and stacte and cassia perfume thy garments, from the ivory houses…).
