Original leaf  from a medieval illuminated manuscript Book of Hours. 14 lines of hand-ruled text written in Latin with dark brown ink in fine Gothic script on animal vellum. One two-line illuminated initial in liquid gold on red ground with red penwork and a floral design into the margin in red, green, blue and gold; seven one-line illuminated initials in liquid gold on alternating red and blue ground.

Origin:  Flanders circa 1475.

Size (each leaf):  90 x 67mm – 3 ½ x 2 5/8 inches, from a diminutive manuscript likely written for a lady.

The two-line illuminated “D” begins Psalm 23 (King James 24) complete: “Domine est terra…” (The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof: the world, and all they that dwell therein. For he hath founded it upon the seas; and hath prepared it upon the rivers Who shall ascend into the mountain of the Lord: or who shall stand in his holy place? The innocent in hands, and clean of heart, who hath not taken his soul in vain, nor sworn deceitfully to his neighbor. He shall receive a blessing from the Lord, and mercy from God his Savior…Who is this King of Glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of Glory).
