Image Size: 15 x 19.5 inches  (380x495mm)     Paper Size: 16 x 20.75 inches

Dated 1622 in the cartouche, and signed "Judoco Hondius".  Copper engraving, printed on paper. Verso Blank, centerfold as published.

This is a scarce detailed map of France of the early 17th century, elaborately and beautifully engraved. The upper left portion stretches across the English Channel to the lower part of England.  The map is enhanced by a large strapwork title cartouche, three sailing ships and a fanciful sea creature. The arms of France are at upper right.

A notation at lower center states the map is available for sale by Melchior Tavernier of Paris.  Melchior Tavernier was involved in the publishing trade in Paris in the early years of the seventeenth century. “Early in his career, he apparently collaborated with Henricus Hondius, as at least one of his early maps references Tavernier as the seller of a map engraved in Amsterdam, by Hondius.” (this map). Nice antiquarian condition, thin spot professionally reinforced on verso - no loss of engraving.
