$0.00

“PROVINCIA… PROVENCE” Amsterdam: Willem & Joan Blaeu, c. 1642. Fine engraved map with original centerfold as issued from Blaeu’s Atlas Novus.  Verso text: German. (Paper size : 19 5/8 x 23’’ - Image : 15 ¼ x 21 ¼’’)

This very attractive early 17th century map depicts the Provence Region in Southeastern France bordering Italy and the Mediterranean Sea – and includes Nice, Avignon, Marseille and Montpellier.  The map encompasses the coastal region known as the French Rivera (Cote d'Azur). This region is also noted for rosé wines.

Topographical features are shown with most towns, cities, forests and waterways identified. Numerous chateaux (castles), abbeys and churches are also located. The beautiful and elaborate title cartouches with coat-of-arms, and ships at sea further enhance the map.

Blaeu was founder of the leading 17th century Dutch cartographic firm. “The achievements of the firms of Blaeu were remarkable, & the palm for supremacy in map production in any age must be awarded to the Blaeu” (Tooley: Maps & Map-Makers, p. 33).
