Original incunabula Bible leaf in German printed by Anton Koberger of Nuremberg in 1483 – from the scarce deluxe edition with original hand-coloring. (360 x 255 mm – 14 ¼ x 10’’)

The first Bible printed in the city of Nuremberg. Printed the year of Martin Luther’s birth and the considered the best German Bible up until Luther’s. Reference: Hain 3167.

This early leaf consists of text printed in gothic letter in two columns. The hand-colored woodcut engraving (recto) depicts Joshua by the Gates of Jericho:  Joshua, in full medieval armor (identified by his name between his feet) stands in front of the gates of Jericho – priests can be seen blowing trumpets behind him. The Holy Spirit, in the form of a dove, is present in the upper right corner.  

The text is from Joshua 5:1 – 6:27:  “Und so nun…” (Now when all the kings of the Amorrhites, who dwelt beyond Jordan…But the seventh day, rising up early, they went about the city, as it was ordered, seven times.  And when in the seventh going about the priests sounded with the trumpets, Joshua said to all Israel: Shout: for the Lord hath delivered the city to you…So all the people making a shout, and the trumpets sounding, when the voice and the sound thundered in the ears of the multitude, the walls forthwith fell down: and every man went up by the place that was over against him: and they took the city…).
