Original incunabula Bible leaf in German printed by Anton Koberger of Nuremberg in 1483 – from the scarce deluxe edition with original hand-coloring.

The first Bible printed in the city of Nuremberg. Printed the year of Martin Luther’s birth and the considered the best German Bible up until Luther’s. Reference: Hain 3167.

This early leaf consists of text printed in gothic letter in two columns. The hand-colored woodcut engraving (recto) depicts Battle scene representing the destruction of the Family of Jeroboam:  The battle scene depicts an action-packed scene with soldiers in full medieval armor destroying the family of Jeroboam.    

The text is from III Kings (King James I Kings) 14:22 – 16:79:  “Und Iuda… “(And Juda did evil in the sight of the Lord, and provoked him above all that their father had done…In the eighteenth year of the reign of Jeroboam the son of Nabat, Abiam reigned over Juda……And he walked in all the sins of his father…In the twentieth year of Jeroboam king of Israel, reigned Asa king of Juda…).
