The Europe folio, with only 282 subscribers, contains some of Gould's most beautiful and dramatic images! The plates were drawn and lithographed by Elizabeth Gould, Edward Lear and John Gould - after traveling extensively to zoos, private collections and museums throughout Europe.
Although he was not always awarded credit, Edward Lear drew most of the larger birds such as eagles, storks, cranes, herons, owls, flamingos and pelicans. The smaller birds were depicted by Elizabeth Gould from sketches and designs by her husband. Colorists were Elizabeth Gould and George Bayfield. (REF: Maureen Lambourne Birds of the World, p. 26).
