“SOUTH AFRICA”  Chicago and New York: Rand, McNally & Co., c. 1898.  Color-printed map with original color. Reference: Norwich, Map 204 (1892) (Image: 19 x 26 – Paper size: 21 3/8 x 28 3/8’’).

This detailed map depicts South Africa in great detail. Provinces are delineated and in contrasting colors.  Topographical features are very well noted with major towns, cities, waterways, railroads, islands, deserts, and mountains identified.

Gold fields in the South African Republic are noted. Kimberley and the surrounding diamond fields are depicted in Griqualand West, where large diamond discoveries were developed in 1867, long before gold was unearthed from the Witwaterstrand.

Johannesburg (in South African Republic) is noted (as a small town) 18 years after the world’s largest goldfield was discovered and proclaimed in 1886.  A highly informative view of the region as it was known in the 1890’s.
