This unusually detailed map depicts Philadelphia, as it was known in the 1890’s. Railroads are shown – both existing and proposed. Major streets are named and several cemeteries and squares are located. Numerous buildings and institutions are also identified (Pennsylvania Hospital for the Insane, University of Pennsylvania, Independence Hall, Girard College…).  The inset, right, depicts “Philadelphia and Vicinity”. The key beneath the title lists the “Piers on Delaware River” – identifying every pier by the business which uses it!!

“Rand, McNally & Co. specialized in filling the great demand for maps & guidebooks occasioned by the westward expansion of the U. S. in the 2nd half of the 19th century... Their maps were constantly updated with new information and thus serve as an eloquent witness to the westward march of railroads, settlements, and counties as the frontier disappeared." (Crossroads of Empire, p.53).
