“MAP OF KANSAS, NEBRASKA AND COLORADO. Showing also THE SOUTHERN portion of DACOTAH.” Philadelphia: S. Augustus Mitchell, Jr.  c. 1866.  Engraved map with original hand-coloring. (Image:  11 3/8 x 14'')

This handsome map depicts the New State of Kansas (admitted 1861), and Territories of Nebraska (admitted 1867), Colorado (admitted 1876) and the southern portion of Dacotah (this region includes present-day Wyoming - which was made a Territory in 1868.  Dacotah was split into North and South Dakota and admitted in 1889).  Counties are in contrasting colors and topographical features shown.

The “Gold Region” surrounding Denver City is highlighted.  Indian Tribes and “ancient ruins” are located throughout the map. Major towns, cities, rail routes, land and water routes are identified and exploratory routes delineated.

Also of note:  the Black Hills region in “Dacotah Territory”  is shown where in just a few years (1875) gold would be discovered & Indian Wars would commence (Battle of the Little Big Horn in 1876).  At the time this map was published the “First Sioux War” was occurring (caused in part by U.S. project to construct a road from Ft. Laramie to Bozeman - ending in 1868).
