$975.00

“AMERICA” Abraham Ortelius. Published in Venice: Giovanni Magini, c. 1596. Verso text: Latin. Engraved map on hand-made paper.  (Ref: Burden # 93). (Paper size:  160 x 230mm – 6 5/8 x 6 ½’’    Image size:  140 x 183mm – 9 x 7 1/8’’).

This beautifully engraved 16th century map is based on the folio Americas map by Ortelius.   From the 1596 edition edited by the distinguished Italian geographer Giovanni Magini,  and engraved in this format by Girolamo Porro.

This map shows the famous great bulge at the southwestern coast of South America. Dozens of place names appear in New France, the Southwest, Mexico, the Caribbean, Peru, and Brazil - including Sierra Nevada, Apalchen and Quivira (a mythical city described to Coronado as “rich in gold with lordly rulers”. Quivira continued to appear on maps throughout the 18th century - spawning the imagination of the map-reader and explorer).

A remarkably fine example of this historic map - very clean and with an unusually strong impression.

Presented in an archival 11 x 14'' mat
