BOOK OF HOURS AND CALENDAR 

Book of Hours, use of Rome, in Latin. Paris, France: Gilles Hardouyn , c.1510 (almanac for 1510-1530) Large Format (235 x 140 mm – 9.25 x 5.5 inches).
 
Printed on vellum, ruled in red or black. 91 leaves (of 92), lacking d1. Twenty two large miniatures, including the title page with centaur device, Astronomical Man on verso of title, and elaborate tail piece with two angels holding a heraldic device.   Metal-cut borders on all other pages, numerous three-line, two-line and one-line initials in gold on red or blue panels throughout. Almanac for 1510-1530 with fully populated calendar for twelve months.
 
Ten of the large images are the work of the Master Jean Pichore, while the rest of the miniatures and border scenes are ascribed to the Master of Anne de Bretagne.
 
18th century red morocco binding with gilt and stamped designs and borders on front and back covers and 6 panels of gilt embellishment on spine. Spine title in gilt “Heures a Usage de Rome a Paris 1510”. Expected scuffing and wear, but altogether presentable.
 
Provenance: very fine illuminated 18th century coat of arms for the Wilcock family tipped in at front endpaper. Nineteenth century collation notation of Bernard Quaritch on recto of back endpaper.
 
An exceptional printed Book of Hours with a larger suite of miniatures than normally encountered, in remarkably clean and unworn condition internally.
