This extremely detailed map depicts Montana Territory six years before 1889 statehood, with its counties named and in contrasting pastel colors. Helena is identified as the territorial capital.  Topographical features are well noted, with major land, rail and water routes identified.  Indian Reservations, Trading Posts, and Military Reservations are also shown, including Fort Custer (established in 1877 following the Little Bighorn Battle).

Yellowstone National Park in northern Wyoming (established 1872) is also delineated. A very informative view of the area as it existed in the 1880’s.
