“COUNTY MAP OF TEXAS”  Philadelphia:  S. Augustus Mitchell, Jr., 1860. Engraved map in extremely fine condition with exceptionally bright original hand-coloring. (Ref: Day, #2021; Phillips, #831) From the first issue of the First Edition of Mitchell's New General Atlas, published and dated 1860 in the lower margin(Image: 10 ½ x 13 ¼’’)

This detailed historical map depicts Texas with its counties named and in contrasting colors.  Topographical features are shown (and described) with major towns, cities, water routes, mountain passes identified.  Railroads (existing and proposed) and wagon routes are also located.

Sites of important Battles are noted throughout (Ft. Alamo, Palo Alto, Resaca de la Palma…).

The inset shows “Galveston Bay, and Vicinity.”

A fascinating view of the state as it existed prior to the onset of the American Civil War, and a fine example of a scarce and appealing map of Texas. The 1860 first issue of the Mitchell, jr map is distinguished by its particularly bold handcoloring, unique dark floral border, and lack of a plate number outside the border.
