"County Map of Illinois" c 1863 - Mitchell

$0.00

“COUNTY MAP OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS”  Philadelphia:  S. Augustus Mitchell, Jr., c. 1863 from the New General Atlas (dated 1861 in the lower margin but published in the 1863 Atlas).  Engraved map with exceptionally bright original hand-coloring.  (Image: 13 x 10 ¾’’)

This map, with its highly ornate border, depicts the State of Illinois with its counties named and in contrasting colors.  Topographical features are shown, and major cities, towns, railroads, land routes and water routes are shown.

The inset shows the “PLAN OF CHICAGO” identifying most streets and rail lines - just 8 years before the great fire of 1871 (which destroyed over half the city). A very detailed view of the state at a time when the country was immersed in the American Civil War.
