$3,750.00

“DIVERSI GLOBI TERR-AQVEI...” Augsburg: Matthias Seutter, c. 1735. Engraved map with original hand coloring. (Ref:  Moreland & Bannister, Antique Maps, p 89 –1730, illustrated; Portinaro & Knirsch, Cartography of North America, pl CXIX; Nebenzahl, The Compass, 6:36). (Image: 19 5/8  x 22 7/8 ’’) Very fine condition and color, center fold as issued.

The large center double hemispheric map is surrounded by numerous wind gods and features the routes of many famous explorers. Australia is shown in its transitional delineation - with additional notes detailing its discovery.

America, particularly the northwest coast, is also shown in a transitional delineation with the shape of California as an island as a triangular shaped island, and Alaska noted as Terra Essonis.

Of particular note are The Great Lakes, which appear in uncommon form, and the mythical “Great Lake” which appears in the Florida Region - a misconception that was promoted by Hondius’ 1606 map of Virginia & Florida.

Also included are insets with north and south polar projections and views of the globe from four oblique angles.

A superior example of one of the most decorative and informative world maps produced in the 18th century!
