c 1760 "Asia Cum omnibus..." - Seutter - Lotter - Unusual map

$195.00

“ASIA…” Seutter. Augsburg:  T. C. Lotter, c. 1760. Engraved map with original hand-coloring. (Image: 7 5/8 x 9 7/8 ’’)

This is the reduced edition after Seutter’s map of Asia. The map depicts the Asian continent with countries named and in contrasting colors. The shape of Japan is particularly unusual – with the “Unknown Land of Yedso” attached to the island. Compagnie Land is located to the east and includes a note that it was discovered by Don Jean de Gama.

Nova Zembla contrary to most contemporary maps of Asia, is shown as a peninsula joined to the mainland of Asia.

The Novae Phillippinae Insulae are placed a little too far to the south of the Caroline Islands. Topographical features are well shown and cities, towns, waterways, mountains, forests, deserts, and islands are identified.
