“NORTHWESTERN AMERICA SHOWING THE TERRITORY CEDED BY RUSSIA TO THE UNITED STATES” Philadelphia:  S. Augustus Mitchell, Jr.,from Mitchell's New General Atlas, c. 1867 (dated lower margin).  Engraved map with original hand-coloring.(Image: 11 ½ x 14 ¼”) . Excellent condition with attractive color.

This map, with its highly ornate border, depicts the Alaska Territory the year of the 1867 treaty. The area was ceded by Russia to the U.S. for $7,200,000 by treaty of 1867, negotiated by Secretary of State Seward (hence the early nickname of Alaska as “Seward’s Folly”).

Because of its recent acquisition, many of the names still appear in Russian. Based on the map published by the U.S.C.S. Department, it was considered the most accurate of the area to date.
