c 1735 "ASIA..." - Matthias Seutter

$995.00

“ASIA…” Augsburg: Matthias Seutter, c. 1735. Engraved map with old hand-coloring. References: Yeo #120; Tooley (Australia) #1135. (Image: 19 ½ x 22 ½ ’’)

This highly attractive map depicts the Asian continent with countries named and in contrasting colors.

The shape of Japan is particularly unusual – with the “Unknown Land of Yedso” attached to the island. Compagnies Land  is located to the east and includes a note that it was discovered by Don Jean de Gama.

Nova Zembla contrary to most contemporary maps of Asia, is shown as a peninsula joined to the mainland of Asia.

The Novae Phillippinae Insulae are placed a little too far to the south of the Caroline Islands.

Topographical features are well shown and cities, towns, waterways, mountains, forests, deserts, and islands are identified.

The two large cartouches depict various inhabitants of the continent in their native attire, and plants and animals (elephant, lion, parrot…) indigenous to the region.

Shipped unmatted.
