Brookshaw’s Pomona Britannica [1804-1812] is one of the most stately and distinctive series on fruit ever produced. Brookshaw depicted 256 varieties of fruit from specimens taken from the Royal Gardens at Hampton Court.
The fruit are a combination of stipple, aquatint and linear engraving partially color printed with elegant hand-finishing. This sumptuous series is considered to be one of the finest botanical works ever produced!
George Brookshaw (1751-1823) led a life shrouded in mystery. Born in Birmingham in 1751, He moved to London in 1777 and began his first career as a celebrated cabinetmaker. He was known for his finely detailed hand painted furniture. During that period, the Prince of Wales was his most distinguished patron. From the mid 1790’s, his life was spent in anonymity by his own design, under an assumed name. In 1804, Brookshaw, returned to public view as the earliest parts of Pomona Britannica were issued. He died in 1823, eleven years after the completion of his great work.
