“JOHNSON'S FLORIDA”  New York:  Johnson and Ward,  c. 1862.  Lithographed map with original hand-coloring. (Image: 12 x 15 1/4'')

This attractive historical map depicts Florida with its counties named and in contrasting colors.  Topographical features are shown with major towns, cities, forts, roads, rail and water routes identified (including proposed canal routes).

The Arredondo Grant is shown in Alachua County. It was a Spanish Land Grant given to Spanish merchant Arredondo and was dissolved when Florida joined the US.

Forbes Purchase is noted in the panhandle counties of Leon, Liberty & Wakulla. It was a large tract of land purchased from Spain by 3 American traders. After statehood Florida attempted to seize the land, but the Supreme Court ruled against the state.  The area was primarily uninhabitable swampland and eventually sold off in lots.

Also provided is a very detailed inset of the ''Plan of the Florida Keys'' which notes the ''Indian Hunting Grounds''.  A very informative view of the state as it was known during the Civil War.
