Original manuscript leaf from an illuminated manuscript of the Shanama or Book of Kings - one of the most famous of all Persian manuscripts.  Paper is very fragile with old repairs on the back.   (Text block: 250x138mm)          

Persia, c. 1550.

Very fine calligraphy, in four columns of Persian Nastaliq script on polished paper, sprinkled with gold. Margins ruled in blue, orange, red and gold, with column bars in a floral motif on gold ground. Headings are in white script surrounded by flowers on a gold ground. (Ref: Soudaver, Art of the Persian Court).
