SILVER COIN – TETRADRACHM, ANCIENT GREECE – MACEDONIA c. 336 - 323 BC

An ancient silver coin (tetradrachm) in extremely fine condition, from the reign of Alexander the Great of Macedonia, mounted as a pendant in 14K gold so that both sides may be viewed.
Obverse: Head of Heracles wearing a lionskin helmet, right. Reverse: Zeus seated on a throne, holding an eagle.
Alexander III of Macedon, commonly known as Alexander the Great, was King of Macedon, a state in northern ancient Greece. Born in Pella in 356 BC, Alexander was tutored by Aristotle until the age of 16. By the age of thirty, he had created one of the largest empires of the ancient world, stretching from the Ionian Sea to the Himalayas. He was undefeated in battle and is considered one of history's most successful commanders.
Provenance: ex Pennsylvania estate collection. Pendant hand-crafted in 14k gold by Cardon Jewelers, St. Thomas, VI (marked). Diameter without loop 33 mm, total weight 28.53 gm.
