Uncommon Silver “Crossbow” Fibula

Ancient Roman - Circa 2nd - 3rd Century AD

Size: 1 7/8 x 1 3/16 inches -- (48 x 30 mm

This fibula (clasp for fastening garments – such as the Roman toga) is an excellent example of the "Crossbow" style favored by Roman Soldiers, but the use of silver, rather than bronze, is very uncommon.

Fine condition: The fibula is complete and the pin is intact, though the mechanism is not moveable.

The fibula was in widespread use throughout the ancient world. The Roman conquests spread the use of the fibula, which became the basis for more complicated brooches. In the severe climate of northern Europe, it routinely functioned as a fastening for a heavy cloak or tunic. This Roman safety-pin type of fibula continued to be used up into the Middle Ages.
