$3,750.00

Sensational stone lithograph with original hand-coloring from John Gould’s FAMILY OF TOUCANS. (This image illustrated & described in Birds of the World by Maureen Lambourne, pl. 57).

(Paper size: 21 ¾ x 14 ¾’’)

In this impressive monograph, John Gould included new species discovered in South America by explorers Natterer, Wallace and Schomburgk.  The images are some of the most colorful, desirable and exotic of the Gould lithographs.  These delightful birds are found in the tropical forests of America and derive their name from the Tupi Indians of Brazil who call them ‘tucano’.  H. C. Richter “depicted the toucans with authentic tropical plants, orchids and palms…” (Lambourne, p. 47).

This edition, which contained only 51 different lithographs, was completed in London, c. 1852-54.

This particular image of two Toco Toucans  (Ramphastos Toco) is considered the finest and most desirable image of the monograph.
