Original Photograph of a Civil War Union Artillery Soldier, c. 1864 by C. Tolan, 924 North Second St., Philadelphia. (Image: 7 ¼ x 5 ½’’)  

The soldier stands proudly beside a chair draped with an American flag and also displaying his hat with "A" device. In original mat & frame with the back of the frame retaining some of the original sticker from the Tolan Studio. The outside of the frame measures 13 x 11 inches.

Provenance: Purchased in 1971 from an estate near Vineland, NJ in this frame with mat and original backing board. The frame was disassembled and cleaned, and an acid free mat barrier placed between the photo and the wooden backing. The oval shaped walnut frame is in excellent condition for the period, and retains its brass inner bezel. Chalkley Tolan is listed in the Directory of Civil War Photographers as having a Philadelphia studio at 924 N. Second Street in 1864-65.
