An original engraving by Felix O. C. Darley (pencil-signed by both artist and publisher). Darley (1822-88) was born in Philadelphia. He gained a reputation as an accomplished pen & ink artist, and his “fine drawings in outline for (Washington) Irving, (James Fenimore) Cooper, and other authors place him in the front rank of the illustrators” (Fielding). He also illustrated for Dickens and Hawthorne, and designed bank-note vignettes for Toppan, Carpenter & Co. Exhibited at the National Academy from 1845 and a Member from 1852.
