An original etching by Chauvel after a painting by Daubigny. The etching depicts a tranquil scene in the Optevoz Valley.

Theophile-Narcisse Chauvel (1831-1909), was equally accomplished in the mediums of painting, etching and lithography. Considered one of the most important pioneers of the French etching revival.  In 1855 he exhibited at the Paris Salon. Chauvel studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1854 and by 1855 he was exhibiting his paintings at the Paris Salon. He was drawn almost exclusively to the art of landscape and became close friends with most of the artists, including, Daubigny, Rousseau, Diaz and Jules Dupre.

Charles-Francois Daubigny (1817-1878)  was one of the painters of the Barbizon School, and is considered an important precursor of Impressionism.
